Pretty much what it says on the tin in V1. I recently wrote my thesis on Voice, so its a distillation of some of the ideas in that, and is especially influenced by an interview I did with Screaming Toenail vocalist / artist, Jacob V Joyce. Jacob also contributed to the chorus lyrics for this song.
The song connects to The Sound, but focusses in on voice, as a sound that comes directly from our bodies, as an expression of self. There is a lot of politics around who is heard and what that means; and many marginalised groups are only tolerated when they are quiet, and are otherwise silenced. I think this is really obvious in the backlash against survivors and their allies who have spoken up against abusers.
The X-Ray Spex sample for me totally distills a pervading attitude towards women in patriarchal culture (which is breaking) and how punk and being loud resists this: “Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard, but I think… up yours! 1,2,3,4!”
Whilst speaking from my experience as a woman, I’m trying to draw links with voices and bodies that are marginalised for different reasons to build solidarity and volume as resistance.
lyrics
Voices of the marginalised
Tolerated if we remain quiet
Bodies of the marginalised
Tolerated under their control
Voices of the marginalised
Tolerated if we remain quiet
Bodies of the marginalised
Tolerated
Tolerated!
I’m raising my voice louder
It carries me beyond their walls
Our silence will not save us
They can’t contain they can’t control
They can’t control
Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard
But I think UP YOURS 1,2,3,4
Keep your voice down
Know your place
Bite your tongue
You best behave
Keep your head down
Stay in line
Keep your mouth shut
With a lovely smile
i love how punk is taking new approaches all around the globe. more about the attitude again. this surely is one to shine out.
truly, an entertaining way to scream out "fuck supressive machoism!" - like it. Rüdiger Jay
